Tips for spotting quality

Like many things crafted with rare and expensive materials, crocodile skins can be categorised in grades of quality, just like diamonds. Under the expertise of a leather goods maker, there are 3 pillars when conducting quality inspection.

1. CUT

The pattern of the crocodile skin differs from the back and the belly. When cutting the panels for our handbags, it is important to consider the direction of the pattern and which part to cut from. For our products, we ensure that the belly portion is used to showcase the best part of the skins.

2. CLARITY

Skins are checked for cuts and blemishes before harvest. These marks may occur from a list of various reasons including bug bites, rough surfaces. Each product is checked for any blemishes that may appear on the final product.

3. COLOUR

To craft one handbag, usually two to three pieces of skin is used. Skins which are dyed with different barrels will have different tones. Sometimes the same skin may have different tones as well due to the texture and nature of the skin. Therefore, it is important to pay special attention when cutting and colormatching the panels for the handbag. Additional finishing and treatment of the skin may be required to ensure the finish product is flawless.

Each Ferida Yang handbag is quality controlled under the above guidelines. The process is a labor of love under expert craftsmanship to create products that will remain timeless and beautiful with age.
